Abstract

This dissertation explores the issue of visual arts and acting activity of adults with intellectual disability. The research question that was addressed in this study concerned the meaning conveyed by the artistic creative and acting activity of adults with intellectual disability. The research was also aimed at identifying the areas of exclusion of people with intellectual disability in the realm of arts as well as ways to combat discrimination. Research reflections begin with the presentation and analysis of data concerning the preferences of the research subjects regarding the choice of a particular artistic activity. Another issue discussed in this dissertation is an attempt at describing artistic micro-environments formed by adults with intellectual disability. Further discussion pertains to individual, personal perception of the artistic activity of people with intellectual disability being a result of phenomenographic research. The research is concluded by a reflection on the presence of the art created by people with intellectual disability in the social and cultural space. The conducted research shows that people with intellectual disability involved in artistic activity construct an autonomous message regarding their activity and are capable of explaining the meaning of their work. Owing to the fact that action research approach was adopted the main areas of discrimination of people with intellectual disability in the realm of arts have been exposed, which made it possible to take action aimed at alleviating the situation
