Abstract: In the introduction to the critical edition of the work of Aphrahat (260/275– –345) his translator, Joannes Parisot, lists different Syrian terms, which the author himself applied to characterize his study addressed mainly to the „sons of covenant” („epistolae”, „sermones/homilae”, „capita”, „memoriae”, „res gestae/historiae/tractatus”, „sermones”). The meaning of the term tahweytha („demonstratio”) must be emphasised here, since Aphrahat uses it as a means of presenting the conduct of the biblical figures who demonstrate and preach, encourage and teach, remind of and explain the mysteries of God’s wisdom. tahweytha, probably edited by the Persian Sage, were being read out in the form of a pastoral letter in the monasteries of the „sons of covenant”.
