Abstract

Publishing collections of certain type of jokes — called stale jokes — has become popular among Internet users. Around these collections, particular communities of laughter are being established. The common awareness of the divergence of these forms from other types of humorous expressions endows them with certain characteristic features, which are manifested in the pragmatic incongruity of these acts of speech. In the article, the relation between the contemporary culture of derivative orality and iconicity, and the incongruity or ineffectiveness of stale jokes, is reflected upon.
