Les Belles-soeurs de Michel Tremblay : le jeu de l'ellipse et de l'abondance ou comment traduire le joual

Abstract

« Les Belles-soeurs » de Michel Tremblay se caractérise par l’enracinement dans la culture de départ, premièrement à travers la langue (l’usage du joual pour la première fois dans le théâtre québécois), puis par la thématique (une image impitoyable de la société québécoise), ce qui fait que beaucoup d’éléments demeurent implicites pour les lecteurs du texte de départ. On a donc affaire à un phénomène d’ellipse propre à l’original, qui n’est pas caractéristique pour la traduction. Vu que le rôle de cette dernière se fonde aussi sur l’interprétation et l’explication, voire même l’explicitation de la culture de départ, le traducteur devrait sans doute recourir souvent aux outils plus proches de l’abondance. À la base de la traduction polonaise des « Belles-soeurs », le présent article analyse le phénomène de transmission d’un texte littéraire québécois d’une culture à une autre par le biais des trois axes étroitement liés : celui de la langue (le rôle et l’importance du joual), l’axe culturel (les éléments propres à la culture québécoise, liés à l’usage du joual, qui restent implicites et, d’autre part, qu’il faut absolument expliciter à un lecteur polonais) et finalement l’axe traductologique proprement dit lié aux procédés caractéristiques pour la traduction d’une pièce de théâtre. « The Sisters-in-Law »by Michel Tremblay is characterized by a deep-rootedness in the source culture, primarily by means of the language (the use of joual for the first time in the Quebec theatre), but also by the theme (the ruthless image of the Quebec society), which make a lot of elements implicit to the readers of the source text. It is a phenomenon of ellipse proper for the original, that is not characteristic for the translated text. Taking into consideration that the translation is based also on interpretation and explication, or even on clarifying the source culture, the translator is often supposed to resort to the tools appearing to be on the verge of abundance. Based on the Polish translation of “The Sisters-in-Law”, the paper analyzes the phenomenon of transmission of the Quebec literary text from one culture to another by means of the three axis closely connected : the axis of language (the role and the importance of joual), the cultural axis (the elements proper for the Quebec culture, connected with the use of joual, that remain implicit and, on the other hand, that should be absolutely clarified to a Polish reader) and, last but not least, the translation axis connected with the processes characteristic for the translation of the theatre play.
