Abstract: Many companies have codes of ethics. They are often treated by the management of these companies and by the business environment as a manifestation of ethical action. I decided to check if this is indeed. For this purpose I analyzed 49 codes. The conclusions are not optimistic – analysed codes do not comply with the ethical standards. From the point of view of the presence of workers’ rights corporate codes of ethics are authoritarian and restrictive, and sometimes they are paternalistic. Part of the standards in corporate codes of ethics can even be considered as a tool for construction of a total institution – in the Goffman’s meaning.
