Abstract: Periodically returning to the mainstream of theological considerations, the issue of the relationship between the universal Church and the local churches remains open to new questions and research problems. Recent years brought him new renown thanks to the debate of cardinals – Joseph Ratzinger and Walter Kasper, who diffused their view of the ontological and temporal priority of the universal Church in front of the local Churches. The common point of their deliberations became communio – a concept considered to be the key to understanding the ecclesiological council. Therefore, it seems reasonable to analyze the adequacy of the use of this concept to determine the relationship between the universal and local Church, mainly based on the texts of the Church’s Magisterium, but also modern scientific articles.
