Abstract: This article attempts to position Czesław Miłosz’s beyond the borders of poetic modernism. The argument is based on a conjectural transfer of Miłosz’s work into the future, ie. putting it into the context of authors making their debut after 1989. This mental experiment assumes the both the continuous existence of the humanist tradition of poetry and its reconfiguration in the process of cultural change. Anchored in the traditions of high modernism, Miłosz’s poetry functions as a complement to the project of an anthropocentric art with its incontestable border between the human and the non-human. The relocation of his work out of its original sphere reveals that it does comprise an ‘anti-humanist’ element which, despite Miłosz’s efforts to displace it, gives rise to questions about the validity of the borderline between the human and the non-human world.
