Abstract

The word „morals”, although frequently employed both in colloquial and scientific language, lacks clear and definite meaning. The ambiguity and incoherence o f the concept present difficulties for both scholars who attempt to precisely delineate the subject o f their investigation and normative ethicists who aim at demonstrating what is good in the moral sense. The author of the paper discusses various modes o f comprehending morals and presents attempts at definining the concept. After introducing various definitions o f morals (in respect o f form as well as content, and also analytical, synthetic and regulating ones) she points to the usefulness o f the definitions o f morals and methodological knowledge in both research and moral choices.
