Abstract: The starting point for the topic Stefan Themerson and Jankiel Adler - in search of the artist’s identity is the book Jankel Adler or an Artist Seen from One of Many Possible Angles. Undoubtedly, the Themersons have been very impressed by Jankiel Adler’s work and personality. The coexistence of the text and the drawings in the book has a double impact: you are simultaneously the reader and the viewer. The main aim of the article is an attempt to analyze and interpret Stefan Themerson’s sketch. Themerson’s polyphon-ic sketch falls into the category of a genre collage (featuring elements of storytelling, an interview and a review) that invites you to take multi-threaded considerations. Themer-son writing about Adler actually wrote about himself, and asking questions about the cre-ative attitude, he also asked about the con-dition of man. The sketch reveals his views on both Adler’s and his own art and creative stance. It is also interesting to see Stefan Themerson looking for his own identity in Adler’s oeuvre, as evidenced by the author’s polyphonic sketch characterised by formal complexity.
