Abstract: Attempts to tame rivers were so significant that they can be claimed to have determined directions of civilizational development. Growing technological opportunities allowed for increasingly efficient management of space, where river was the basis of management plans and use of surrounding areas. The case of Wrocław Water Junction shows how centuries-long influences on landscape resulted in the Odra river and its related vicinity being not only a natural and cultural element, but also a dominating component of the city, and at the same time giving the city features of a riverside location. Economic management of the Brda river, as well as construction and use of Bydgoszcz Channel resulted in development of Bydgoszcz Water Junction, which is currently regarded as the genius loci of the city and its main historical, urban and environmental asset. Reclamation programmes that have been carried out for the riverside areas caused the city to turn to the river again after many years of withdrawing from its management.
