Abstract: The core of interest in the article concerns the new dimensions of teachers’ roles. It is considered in the context of the concept of the knowledge-based society. The authors consider the nature of the relation between personal and professional competences and how they contribute to effective teaching as well as participation in professional learning communities. The main assumption is that personal competences pre-empt professional ones and enable teachers to fulfill the roles which are perceived in the different dimensions.
