Abstract

The author proposes the reading of the wartime works of Melchior Wańkowicz, with particular emphasis on Westerplatte and the Battle of Monte Cassino, in the context of the problems of cultural memory and mnemonotopes, assuming that memory (and various ways of recording it) is one of the foundations of these works. The monumental description of the Montecassian offensive, which definitely stands out from the Polish battle literature, is shown in the present article in comparison with other testimonies of this historical event. They are reports of both anonymous participants of the battle and outstanding creators of Polish culture.
