Abstract

The text is an attempt to illustrate semantic changes in definitions constituting the driver names (in a historical perspective from the 20th to 21st centuries). Contrasting lexemes deriving from old highway codes and names present on the automotive portals gives a possibility to compare the motorization lexis within the scope of the very dimension. Broadening or narrowing the meaning, the appearance of new names, de‑actualization of terms or transition of meanings bring about a dynamic development and multidimensional functioning of a driver as an important element of the motorization lexis. At the same time, the stability of some terms proves their universality despite passing time and the development of the car industry.
