Abstract

The paper discusses the largely forgotten letters of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz written from Argentina and Chile. The transoceanic trip brought the writer into contact with the unknown; a world that was unfamiliar linguistically, culturally, in custom, and, above all, one that surprised the senses. Renderings of tastes and scents are the most memorable fragments of these letters, for here he mingles most effectively the familiar and the strange, the essence of being a tourist.
