Abstract

The oevre of Karol Hławiczka – a teacher, musicologist, composer, organist and pianist born in the Cieszyn region in 1894 is exceptionally rich. Hławiczka conducted research into the compositions of Fryderyk Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach, studied the history of the polonaise and hymn, and was published in numerous acclaimed scholarly journals abroad. He composed and performed as a pianist, organist and conductor, and was a very successful teacher. During the interwar period, he authored many songbooks, handbooks and methodological guidebooks for teachers, in which he emphasized the significance of folklore in the educational process of children and youth. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Hławiczka was making efforts to make folk music a part of teaching curricula.
