Abstract

The subject of this work is the evolution of printing knowledge in scientific descriptions created both in current times and in the past. It recalls the views of renowned European and Polish historians from the 18th century on, exposes the significance of the development of publishing statistics for the quantitative description of publishing production, as well as the influence of technological progress on the differentiation of printing companies from the 19th century on. It points to problems in research of printing houses functioning between 1919 and 1939, as well as political determinants occurring in this field in Poland after 1945. It focuses on the difficulty in identification of book printing houses among all printing institutions open after the year 1900. It reveals the consistency of blibliological research in relation to the past, as well as limited relations between blibliological research and the works of other fields analyzing the state of affairs in the printing industry.
