Abstract: There can be little doubt that performance anxiety directly influences the quality of the produced voice. One’s mental state constitutes the fundamental element when it comes to the emergence of performance anxiety, and it remains the key to understanding the mechanisms behind this phenomenon. Usually, this peculiar kind of stress reaction experienced by musicians during public performances is commonly accepted by the vast majority of the performers. Quite often, it is the very performance anxiety that helps them focus on the task at hand. However, there is a significant number of performers for whom the problem of performance anxiety remains a considerable obstacle. The observed physiological, behavioral or cognitive responses of the organism, although easily explained by natural biochemical reactions, become completely incomprehensible in stressful situations. Thus, the available literature on the topic as well as the author’s own observations, conducted in order to familiarise the readers with both theoretical and practical aspects of the problem, served as the basis for the following article.
