Rollen-Spiel. Zu Bertolt Brechts Drama "Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti"

Abstract

The following article is an attempt at feminist rereading of Bertolt Brecht’s play "Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti". The detailed analysis (close reading) focuses on the character of Eva, the daughter of landlord Puntila. The analysis leads to the following conclusion: on the one hand the gender of Eva is something playable and constructible and as such cannot be defi ned. On the other hand under the surface of the roles played by her one can see some traces of identity.
