Abstract

The article analyses personal behaviours that are adopted by Polish society during the plebiscite for the most popular sportsman. The author takes an interdisciplinary approach, availing himself of the attainments of scientists in sociology (Ossowska, Billig), history (Munkler) and cultural studies (Barthes, Eco). On the basis of qualitative analyses, the candidature of the Polish sports hero has been determined. It embodies virtues (attributes) that constitute the social image of the hero. The Polish sports hero is characterized by /1/ being alone in their endeavour to increase their capabilities, /2/ working with a charismatic coach and a specialized supporting team, /3/ participating in a direct rivalry, which takes form of a duel, /4/ affluence, /5/ attachment to family and homeland, /6/ a publicly demonstrated belief in God.
