Abstract

The article presents the principles and the history of creation of the Scientific Information Center and the Academic Library, the common project of University of Silesia and the University of Economics in Katowice. It provides a detailed description of the building, as well as the location and functions of the rooms on each floor. The idea of the free access and the organization of the book collection are characterized. The brief work puts an emphasis on the new role that the university library plays, being not only the place of lending the books, but also becoming the place where the culture is disseminated and the informal meetings take place.
