Abstract: The characteristics of Latin as an ancient language significantly limit the application of methods used in teaching modern languages. The grammar-translation model has, so far, yielded the best results in teaching Latin at the university level, which, in turn, requires the evaluation methods used during the course to reflect that model and the language skills developed in this particular way. Other methods are significantly less effective and should be used only to introduce variety and render the learning process more appealing. The study of Latin is virtually completely devoid of the elements emphasized in the study of modern languages, which, in turn, necessitates the changes in evaluation, in order to take into account the range of the evaluated skills.
