Abstract: The activities promoting multiculturalism, intensified in the middle of the 20th century as a reply to the process of decolonization, increased immigration to so called western countries, as well as to the need for labour force in postwar Europe. Since then, multiculturalism has been still emphasized as the idea necessary for peaceful coexistence and permeation of dissimilarity, which, as a rule, are equal. Nevertheless, there are movements that strive towards the inception of common culture, which means getting rid of the diversity of ethnic groups in favour of a new culture. The tendency seems to be problematic— on the one hand it is dangerous, on the other—utopian in its assumptions conveying eagerness to build human community that is possible solely in the area of imagination since it is doomed to failure because of its detachment from objectivity and history. This article attempts to show multiculturalism in the context of utopian thinking.
