Abstract: | According to UN and EU standards, towns and cities should be designed in the way which minimises their negative impact on the environment, respects the local community and cultural heritage but, at the same time, takes the economic perspective into account. Sustainable development of a town or city is a holistic reasoning of urban principles regarding centres as well as outskirts. The paper highlights the importance of a city centre, main square or market square in an urban space. With an example of an average size city located in the industrial district of the country, the author shows progressing degradation of urban space which consequently leads to social disintegration. The paper assumes that a coherent and consistent urban space with a clearly defined City Centre is the place of social encounter and interaction without which a city remains nothing but a purely administrative creation. |
