Abstract

In the present work a model of interpretation of signs is outlined. The interpretation is independent of the categorization of signs within this model. The only determinant of sign’s interpretation is the intention of its actual interprétant. The meaning of sign, thus, is not its signifié but the freeplay of the signifying parts of the singn — its. signijiant. We distil guish four basic stages of sign’s interpretation; the stage of perception, i.e. the interpretation categorizing signs, the semantic stage, i.e. the conventional linguistic interpretation, and the „literary” stage of acquring new, non-standard meanings by the semantically interpreted sign. Due to its infinite scope, the third stage cannot be subject to any formal analysis. The final stage of sign interpretation is that of „poeticalnes” which, actually, begins and ends the whole process of interpretation. Within that stage sings do not mean anything but „are what they are”.
