Abstract: Presented here are considerations on the subject of inflation and recession in the Polish economy of the early years of the nineteen nineties. This is a comparative analysis based on experiences in implementation of stabilisation programmes in Mexico and Argentina and against the background of successes gained in dynamising the development processes in Japan and South Korea. The starting point for this analysis was provided by the problems involved in choice firstly of a type of stabilisation programme and next the dilemmas encountered in accepting a growth model in view of the inflationary risks and from the aspect of social, cultural, political, economic, internal and economic determinants. Also discussed here are the crucial points in the implementation of the chosen economic policy, specially problems associated with economic stabilisation, indicating the importance of monetary-fiscal discipline, institutional restructuring, reconciliation of social and economic aspirations and also the role of finding a way to start on a stable growth trend, which is also a factor in stabilisation of the economy.
