Abstract: A collection of Kazania niedzielne… (1708) by Antoni Węgrzynowicz is devoted to seven deadly sins. A separate sermon the author dedicated to zelotypia — a form of jealousy occuring between spouses. Fragments of the Holy Bible, which refer to that phenomenon, Węgrzynowicz interprets in favour of women, using the claims and the authority of the Chuch Fathers and other Christian writers, and emphasising the fact that responsibility for a relationship has to be shared by both spouses. Examples which illustrate tragic consequences of zelotypia: i.a. murders committed by husbands on the basis of false suspicions, constitute an important part of the argument. The sermon by Węgrzynowicz includes references to many sources, noted on the margins, of which the most important one is the 17th-century theological compendium Mundus theoreticus… by Georg Stengel, containing a chapter devoted to zelotypia. The Polish preacher aptly uses this text, deriving selected information and quotes from it, which results in an original and interesting sermon of a very intriguing title (the word “zelotypia” never functioned in everyday Polish speech).
