Abstract: This study is devoted to the discussion of the shift of Adam Mickiewicz’s attitude towards Roman literature, which can be seen in his Lausanne lectures. He abandoned the opinion that in the realm of culture Rome was imitative and secondary to Greece. Mickiewicz discovered the peculiarity of Roman literature, which was, according to him, strictly related to its literary character. Roman writers owed their discipline and the sense of form to writing, understood as technology; they were the ones who, in fact, discovered the style as such (which had aesthetic and spiritual results). Aleksander Nawarecki concluded his study with the question whether Mickiewicz’s flush of sympathy for writing had anything to do with the creation of Lausanne lyrics, which were unexpectedly written by the „silent” poet.
