Abstract

A study of two journalist genres carried out by the author indicates that both „reportage” and „press essay” are borderline genres. The liminality mentioned concerns their form and function. The form, manifest in the stylistic design of the whole text, is highly complex, since both the genres draw their characteristics from various levels of language. A reportage resorts to ready genological varieties (genres of primary status) belonging to various functional styles of language and thus constitutes a unique genological mosaic. In certain cases, the composition of the whole message may be determined by a different genre of narration (e.g. a diary). A press essay, itl turn, usually builds upon certain conventions and stylistic devices, which, for a long time, have informed different types of utterances - primarily those derived from numerous artistic varieties of language.
