On the example of the film version of Ashes (Popioły) by Stefan Żeromski directed by Andrzej Wajda in 1966 the author tries to discuss the process of „crushing of the screen text by context”. The thesis which organizes the argument is based on the conviction that the demand for the production of great shows based on literary classics was made use of by various fractions of the party governing in Poland for propagandist purposes as well as in order to impose their own ideological vision upon the society. Ashes turned out to be a good excuse for such a manipulation because it provoked discussions (due to the director’s proclivity to demythologize history and because of the weak coherence of the plot-narrative structure of the screen version) among the representatives of nearly all intelectual circles. As a result - the author claims - of the „cryptodiscussion” which took place in the media the film was deprived of the textual characteristics within the social consciousness.pl_PL
