Abstract

This work deals with the problems of social services which constitute a part of social policy (widely understood). Social services are understood as comprising all institutions and social organizations which undertake the activities whose aim is to fulfill basic social needs. The work discusses briefly the origin of social institutions active in the place of residence (territorial services) and in the place of work (labour services), and their development up to contemporary socialist proffessional services which employ best trained social workers (chapter I). Chapter II deals with the development trends of social services in Poland in the period from 1945 up till the present moment. Legal, institution and organization problems characteristic for these trends have been discussed. A review of actual social services, system, the relations in these services between particular levels of organization structure, and the general characteristics of their essential activity have also been considered. Chapter III draws the readers’ attention to the problems of social work methods, their theoretical origin, their varieties, and to the underlying principles of applying these methods in the work with a single person, with a group or with a big community of district inhabitants or workers. Specific methodological problems, essential for planning and realization of social activity have also been examined. In the end of work the author deals with the perspectives for social services development and with the possibility of subordinating these services to the principles of social planning which would enter the area of social policy in macro and microscale.
