Abstract

Anti-Utopia as a category of consciousness relies, at the aesthetic level, upon the category of grotesque. Grotesque, owing to its structural properties (esp. the principle of inadequacy / contradiction, corresponding to the nature of the anti-utopian vision, which shows the discrepancy between the practically realized utopia and human possibilities), as well as the type of the aesthetic experience it triggers (such as the impression of absurdity, of the bizarre quality in the world, disharmony, horror), helps anti-utopi to create a covincing vision of the presented world in the work of literature. Additionally, grotesque contributes to the deconstruction of utopia by means of polemics, uncloaking its adulterations, and through its demythologization.
