Abstract

The article discusses the constructions and the problems of Bulgarian national and cultural identity based on Ani Ilkov’s poetry written in the 1990s. In the early 1990s, the new political and social realities forced nations of the former Eastern bloc to (re-)read cultural, literary and historical traditions, including the national topoi, myths and stereotypes. Ilkov redefines the national tradition and cultural heritage, he boldly inquires about the problematic Bulgarian identity and reinterprets the historical past.
