Abstract: | The evolution of Samuel Beckett’s style incessantly strives towards experiencing silence, which defies any form of symbolization. This goal’s paradox reveals itself towards the end of the Irish writer’s life, when he is forced to face both his own, short-term aphasia, as well as the entirely irreversible one that affected his close friend. In the light of these two contexts, the author attempts to read Samuel Beckett’s final poem, entitled “what is the word”. In his reading, he references to the contemporary philosophy (Jean-Luc Nancy, Gilles Deleuze, and Emil Cioran, among others) and the Polish criticism on Beckett (Antoni Libera and Jakub Momro, among others), and proposes a reading aimed at the senses of sight and hearing. The stake of such an order is an attempt to reach such forms of subjectivity, which would open the text up for itself: the non-linguistic sense in its purest form. |
