The paper in question is devoted to the matter of translation, in particular, the issues connected
to its artistic (literary) variety. The main aspects of a good translation is its faithfulness in rendering
the original text, i.e. conveying the language content (the meaning); communicating particular reality,
i.e. the internal world and temper of an author; and also the faithful transmission of cultural elements
contained in an original text.
After a theoretical introduction, the present paper deals with chosen literary works of Italian
literature translated into Polish and French. These are Il Fu Mattia Pascal (The Late Mattia Pascal)
by Luigi Pirandello and Il deserto dei Tartari (The Tartar Steppe) by Dino Buzzati. In this part of the
article the mistakes made by three Polish and one French translator were highlighted. Among these
are: interpretive, stylistic, semantic and grammatical, stemming from cultural, ethnical and linguistic
differences between the language and culture of Italy and two other countries.
