Abstract: The article is an attempt to describe transformations of literary genres in the context of social communication. A text chosen for the analysis is an Old-Polish short story contrasted with a later element of genre evolution — a realistic short story of the second half of the 19th-century. The observation covered the problem of genre origins, structure and composition, subject-matter, communicative functions and selected stylistic problems of the short story. The observation, though superficial, of the genre determinants of the novel in an evolutional perspective, allows for treating this genre as a phenomenon of a relatively clear structure and composition and simultaneously a high complexity level of a thematic, functional, stylistic and discursive level. It is so because of a series of factors, especially the ones pragmatic in character. Also, a substantial influence on the transformations of a short story had a complex and rich genre sequence containing this genre form at different evolutional stages. Basing on the observations conducted it is difficult to explicitly show the place of a short story in social communication, especially if we look at it from a historical perspective.
