Abstract: The purpose of this publication was to determine whether and to what extent the internal orders of selected penitentiary units allow in practice to exercise the rights and freedoms of persons detained in prisons and pre-trial detention centres. The paper uses a dogmatic method combined with an analysis of these orders set by prison directors, received either from these units or obtained from official websites. The research was carried out in several areas of detainees’ rights: availability of water and showers, availability of electricity in the cells, walking conditions and use of tobacco products during walks, organisation of visits, telephone contacts and Internet access, opportunities for engaging in religious practices and rites and having in the cell of religious and religious objects.
