Najnowszy teatr polski wobec mediatyzacji życia publicznego i prywatnego

Abstract

In media society, the disappearance of borders between the private and the public became a widespread occurrence, constantly undergoing critical scientific and artistic examination. The omnipresence of media in the life of a contemporary man is analyzed for their advantages (faster communication and access to information), as well as hazards brought on by the development and domination of modern technologies (homogenization, dehumanization, consumerism). Within the current of musings on the condition of the “media man” — a person who sees and shapes the image of the world through media — contemporary theatre includes its voice, especially the young generation directors. Creators, such as Krzysztof Garbaczewski or Paweł Świątek use new technologies not only as means of stage expression, but also reveal mechanisms, which govern the media system of remitting information, analyzing its effect on culture, society, and private life of individuals. Their productions — analyzed within this work — depict two different tendencies in Polish theatre of dialogue with widely understood “mediality”. The purpose of this article is to depict some common areas that characterize the works of both directors, as well as emphasizing the differences in staging and aesthetic approaches to the same subjects, connected to media expansion of public and private spaces.
