Abstract: The article deals with the problem of the place and role of territorial varieties of Polish in student language education. It was noticed that dialects and folk dialects were apprecia- ted in the Polish education as early as in the inter-war period, and in the curricula as well as school coursebooks and didactic materials having a regional scope in the post-war period, starting from the 1960s. The prestige of the regional education, including the importance of dialects, increased after 1989 in connection with socio-political transformations, and were reflected in ministerial documents. However, new Podstawa programowa from 2008 removed the so called “intercurricular” paths, and a regional education among others. That is why the article pays attention to the need of enhancing dialectal and regional varieties of Polish in the Polish education in schools these days. The functions of a dialect (a communicative, culture-constructive community-constructive and aesthetic one) that are worth being brought to children’s and the youth’s attention, as well as various forms of raising respect towards a dialect and motivating students to learn it were pointed out. It was postulated to take into account the aspects from dialectology, ethnolinguistics and sociolinguistics as well as regional education when preparing Polish philology students for teacher’s profession.
