Abstract

The aim of the article is to describe the imagery of silence present on the pages of a series of essays Raising Mountains: True Life Stories From Polesie, written by Małgorzata Szejnert. The journalist, in her attempt to safeguard the stories of people living in this rather forgotten area from oblivion, not only uncovers their histories, but also creates a tourist guide to Polesie. Despite the fact that each story comprises a coherent whole, all of them center people and places. As a result, Szejnert creates a universal story.
