Abstract

This article is devoted to chosen names of clothes in the Upper Silesian dialect, both contemporary and bygone. This research is thus dialectological. The aim of the analyses is primarily to present the lexical-semantic field of ubranie [garment, clothes], but also to point to the development of the Silesian lexis used for naming the elements of clothing. A significant aspect of the conducted research is also the presentation of the relation between the language and the nonlinguistic factors, which can be found in interpretations of particular lexical units, whose form is strictly dependent on socio-cultural conditions. The gathered material has mainly been taken from dictionary sources, although it has also been contrasted with units in the usus. The conclusions drawn from the presented analyses make it possible to present the Silesian dialect not only in a wider perspective but also in a practical, everyday context which is closely related to the language users; as a result, these conclusions contribute to the development of knowledge of the Silesian language.
