Abstract: In this study, a diagnosis of the vocabulary range of a bilingual child, able to communicatein both Polish and German, has been reached. Presenting the case of a fiveyear-old boy raised in a bilingual family allowed the author to determine how the child’svocabulary range has been developing in each of the languages, and consider whetherthe linguistic competence of a bilingual child is dominating in any of them, or maybe,certain competences are at a similar level in both languages.Using the same test to examine the child’s vocabulary range in both languages, allowedthe author to decide whether the possible poor development of a bilingual child’ssecond (non-dominating) language is a result of his low linguistic competences or ofthe stimulation of the development of the dominating language vocabulary exclusively.Moreover, such an approach also allowed the author to accurately interpret the resultswhich suggested a high level of development of the child’s vocabulary, and detect thechild’s special predispositions for learning languages.
