| Abstract: | Hannibal is depicted as an enemy of a very peculiar kind, as his image is to a great extent based on ethnic terminology (Poenus – Carthaginiensis), and then equipped with typically Punic characteristics, in opposition to Roman ones. The antique writers’ focus on those particular features allowed them to create a peculiar image of an enemy – one who instills fear, yet is somehow tamed through his frequent presence in Roman literature. |
