Abstract: The article analyses a Polish language teacher’s attitude towards a student, the wholeclass, the required realization of the curriculum and the compliance with the schoolsystem regulations. Presenting a teacher in a certain “network” of reciprocal relations,results in obtaining a picture of general constraint, which is additionally intensified by thenecessity of achieving educational success. The author, objecting to such a dehumanisedmodel of a teacher, but also of a student and the process of teaching itself, proposes anexchange of the fashionable slogan of educational success for melancholy which, with allits immeasurability, seems to preserve the values which are most difficult to preserve inthe contemporary school: hesitation, lack of answers, uncertainty and silence. Sustainingthese values may guarantee that the young people will be taught “wisely.”
