Abstract: The departure from pure normativism in the scientific reflection on the essence and mechanisms of the world of politics took the form of a behavioural revolution in the mid-20th century. The shift towards empiricism, the focus on studying real political behaviour, instead of philosophical considerations and the analysis of legal norms and formal rules of functioning of institutions, have fundamentally altered the state of knowledge available through the science of politics. This brought political science closer to the rules of science, meeting, albeit to a limited extent, the methodological demands of positivism. The article is an attempt to present synthetically the genesis and circumstances of the behavioural breakthrough and its contemporary implications.
