Abstract: The subject of the article is to recall three translations of the Odyssey by Józef Wittlin (1924, 1931, 1957) and to examine the various contexts that accompany them. After completing the first version of the translation, the translator, not being satisfied with the final effect of his work, returned to Homer’s songs many times. The epic accompanied Wittlin in all the diffcult moments he experienced. The story of the King of Ithaca reflected the situation of a 20th century man facing two great wars, experiencing extreme anxiety and uncertainty, suffering and finally losing hope of finding the right way home thus returning to the pre-occupation world.
