Abstract

The article opens with the reflection over Don Fabrizio’s death scene, the eponymous character of G.T. di Lampedusa’s Gepard. The reflection allows us to formulate a thesis that seems to be supported by the articles gathered in the book On Happiness. Joyful Contexts. Literature, the mirror of life, reiterates Don Fabrizio’s gesture, which means that out of the sorrows of life it can “decorticate golden moments of happiness.” In other words, literature makes the light come forth through the blackness of letters, contradicting Amiel’s words that “sorrow much often reaches for the pen than for happiness.” History of literature has never been and will never become a history of recording human sorrow, which is proved by the texts collected in the further sections of the article.
