Abstract: | The article deals with apparent progressiveness of undermining gender stereotypes
in books addressed to younger children. The text refers to a few titles (Good girl; Billy is
angry; O Anielce, w którą wstapił diabeł) which thematize gender stereotype which, in
the case of children, equals the opposition: always good girl versus always naughty boy.
By using Judith Butler’s performative idea of gender and related concept of coherent
identity based on repetition, the author shows that simple exchanging of one stereotype
for another (when a good girl becomes naughty) do not lead to any changes, as gender still
remains in the „cage” of binary oppositions. Additionally, the repetition consolidates the
stereotype it was supposed to fight. The only solution would be to undermine the present
representative system, and go beyond the frames of phallocracy. |
