Abstract: The author points out nine fundamental components in the contemporary German communication studies (Kommunikationswissenschaft): (1) main research areas: studies on a sender, communicator, studies on the content of mass media, studies on the characteristics and specificity of mass media, studies on a social reception of mass media, studies on the effectiveness of mass media influence; (2) partial disciplines; (3) the history of communication studies; (4) political studies; (5) research methods; (6) communication theory; (7) understanding communication; (8) opportunities of studying communication studies; (9) literature and sources of communication studies. The author, after asking vital question on dominating research areas, suggests looking for an answer via the analysis of the topics of academic publications within the communication studies. He takes a closer look at two important quarterly journals: Publizistik and Medien & Kommunikationswissenschaft.
