Abstract: The author concentrates on typical features of the children’s language as an autonomous verbal code and shows on selected examples in what way and as what function it is used by poets who write for children. She starts from sound features of small children’s language and instrumental values as well as onomatopoeic nursery rhymes. Next, she refers to such phenomena as word-building and phraseological disintegration, homophony and homonymy, paronomasia, pseudo- etymolog- and other language games. The author of the essay also mentions diminutive lexical forms in poetry for children and linguistic means of hyperbolization of the description. She widely discusses children’s neologisms, emphasising their richness and kinds in poems for children, particularly in the works of Julian Przyboś, Danuta Wawiłow and Joanna Kulmowa. She also points at using the children’s linguistic code by writers for children in such poetic forms as monologue poems and those built on dialogues and interrogative forms. The summary of the considerations leads to the conclusion that the use of children’s language in the poetry written for them has a fatic function and supports the development of speech and mastering the linguistic system by children. Thus, it has ludic, didactic and aesthetic functions.
