Abstract

The following paper Unknown Spaces. Jacek Malczewski’s Poems focuses on the analysis of the different types of spaces which appear in poetic manuscripts of an extraordinary Polish symbolist painter, Jacek Malczewski (1854−1929). The interpretation of the passages of his poetry allows us to re-read the motifs that appear in his paintings. The nature of the artist's imagination, which resembled the space of movement (appearing and disappearing characters, figures, paintings) is related to the way he wrote poems. This article is an attempt to compare various types of spaces — the space of poetry, of canvas and of the typeface of his writing, which are transformed, due to the artist's creativity, into a one, enormous space of text, that resembles Barthesian fabric.
